ILOILO – Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. of this province was named one of the top performing governors in the Philippines based on the result of a survey conducted by RP-Mission and Development Foundation Inc. (RPMDinc) and was published in Manila Times.

Defensor came in the second with 72 percent job approval rating, next to Cebu’s Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia with 77 percent rating.

Here are the Top 5 governors in the RPMDinc’s survey:

* Region 7 (Cebu) – Gwendolyn Garcia (77 percent)

* Region 6 (Iloilo) – Arthur Defensor Jr. (72 percent)

* Region 1 (La Union) – Francisco Emmanuel Ortega III (70 percent)

* Region 11 (Davao del Sur) – Marc Douglas Cagas IV (67 percent)

* Region 3 (Pampanga) – Dennis Pineda (62 percent)

The survey was conducted “across the regions” on June 10 to June 25 for the governors and non-National Capital Region (NCR) city mayors with 5,000 respondents. Some 3,500 respondents from Metro Manila, meanwhile, were surveyed on July 3 to July 10.

According to RPMDinc, they asked the respondents if they approve or disapprove the leaders’ performances.

The RPMDinc said the survey was “independent and non-commissioned”.

“In every region, the city mayors of each capital have been assessed by their constituents on their overall job performances or achievements. As for the governors, we chose the regional center of the provinces to gather significant data for analysis. We are hoping this will give our public servants a good insight on how they are doing with their constituents,” said Dr. Paul Martinez of the RPMDinc.

Defensor, for his part, expressed elation over the result.

Maayo ina nga balita para sa aton di sa probinsya, maayo nga na-intindihan kag na-apresyar man sang aton kasimanwa biskan mabudlay ang direction naton diri sa probinsya sang Iloilo,” said Defensor, referring to the province’s ongoing battled against the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.

TREÑAS RANKED 6TH

Iloilo City’s Mayor Jerry Treñas ranked sixth in the top performing city mayors in the country based on the survey.

Treñas got a 68 percent approval rating while Davao City’s Mayor Sara Duterte topped the survey with 93 percent rating.

Rounding the top five mayors across the country were Mayor Justin Marc Chipeco of Calamba City with 82 percent; Mayor Arnan Panaligan of Calapan City – 77 percent; Mayor Oscar Moreno of Cagayan de Oro City – 74 percent and Mayor Benjamin Magalong of Baguio City – 71 percent.

For Metro Manila mayors, Quezon City’s Mayor Maria Josefina Tanya Belmonte-Alimurung ranked first with 87 percent approval rating.

Belmonte-Alimurung was followed by Pasig City’s Mayor Victor Ma. Regis Sotto with 86 percent; Manila Mayor’s Francisco Domagoso – 80 percent; Valenzuela City’s Mayor Rexlon Gatchalian – 79 percent and Navotas City’s Mayor Tobias Tiangco – 77 percent.

“The objective of the analysis was to get the citizens’ opinion and assessment of the official’s performance in terms of relevant factors related to their duties to society,” Martinez said./PN
