Suspect in death of Kalibo pawnshop manager falls

ILOILO City – The pawnshop security guard suspected of killing his manager in Kalibo, Aklan on June 5 was arrested yesterday, June 9, in Barangay Pinagbuhatan, Pasig City.

Combined personnel of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, Kalibo police station and National Intelligence Coordinating Agency cornered Mark Archie Torrefiel, 31, in the house of a relative around noon.

A resident of Barangay Cajilo, Makato, Aklan, Torrefiel did not resist arrest, said Lieutenant Colonel Arnel Solis, spokesperson of the Police Regional Office 6.

A tipster informed the police of the suspect’s whereabouts.

Torrefiel would be transported back to Kalibo, said Solis.

Kalibo RD Pawnshop personnel found their manager Bonna Hercia Ambay dead inside their establishment on Monday morning, June 6, and they could no longer find Torrefiel, the guard on duty on Sunday.

The 23-year-old Ambay had 18 stab wounds. She was a native of Barangay Nauring, Pandan, Antique and temporarily staying in Crossing Buswang, Barangay Poblacion, Kalibo.

“Insa gin patay mo gid akon bata? Gin guba mo iya future,” Ambay’s father Bonifacio said in a radio interview, directing his question to Torrefiel.

Autopsy results showed Ambay’s fatal stab wound was on her chest. She was not raped.

According to the Kalibo police, Torrefiel was a robbery suspect in Pasig City in 2021./PN
