ILOILO City – A suspect in the hacking of a 60-year-old woman and wounding of the latter’s niece in Barangay Parara Sur, Tigbauan, Iloilo has been arrested.

Twenty-two-year-old laborer Ronilo Camiña was cornered in his house in Barangay Bulad, Guimbal, Iloilo around 2:50 p.m. yesterday. He faces murder and robbery charges.

“He was positively identified by the woman’s niece who survived the hacking,” said Senior Inspector Hermogenes Eulatic, Tigbauan police chief.

Baldomera Duga died of hack wounds on the chest and abdomen while being rushed to the district hospital in Guimbal past midnight on Sunday. Her niece Mary Joy Cabugas, 24, survived the attack.

According to Eulatic, the suspect covered his face with a cloth during the hacking and robbery but he removed it during a scuffle with Duga who put up a fight.

Camiña denied he was the man who attacked Duga and Cabugas. He said he was in his house at the time the crime was being committed.

Eulatic, however, said his men were able to recover a bloodstained shirt at Camiña’s house.

“He did not even try to escape. Our men caught him by surprise,” said Eulatic.

Camiña was taken to the Tigbauan police station.

It was raining late Saturday night. A man was seen sitting on a bench outside Duga’s house, said Eulatic.

Past midnight, Duga was awakened by strange noises. She saw an intruder with a bolo and confronted him. Cabugas said she rushed to her aunt’s rescue but she was hacked, too.

The man took Cabugas’ wallet containing an undetermined amount of cash then left.

The robber entered the house by destroying a jalousie window, initial police investigation showed./PN
