ILOILO City — A suspected former finance officer of the New People’s Army (NPA) was killed in a clash with government troops at Sitio Hilwan, Manica, Libacao, Aklan.
The fatality was identified as 24-year-old Alvin Panoy, also known by his aliases “Jake” and “Vinmar”, and a resident of Lemery, Iloilo.
According to Lieutenant Colonel J-Jay Javines, spokesperson of the Philippine Army’s 3rd Infantry Division (3ID), Panoy previously served as finance and logistics officer for Squad II, Igabon.
The encounter occurred around 6:28 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1, after troops responded to reports from residents about armed men conducting extortion activities in the area.
“When our men arrived, a 10-minute firefight ensued, after which the rebels fled,” Javines said.
Panoy had reportedly been with the NPA for over eight years, intelligence reports showed.
Recovered from the scene were an M16 rifle, three magazines, a bandolier, a backpack, and other personal belongings.
Major General Marion Sison, 3ID commander, commended the efforts of the troops and the local community’s support in maintaining peace and security in Western Visayas. He said the death of Panoy would disrupt the NPA’s influence in Aklan, particularly its financial and logistical operations.
“The neutralization of alias Jake has hindered the rebels’ efforts to regain their foothold in Aklan,” Sison said, urging troops to continue their mission with courage and dedication.
“Your sacrifices strengthen our collective resolve to safeguard our communities and achieve stable internal peace and security,” he added./PN
