ILOILO City – Six suspected New People’s Army (NPA) rebels set on fire two dump trucks in Barangay Wayang, Miag-ao, Iloilo.
The torching happened around 3 p.m. on Tuesday, according to Chief Inspector Norlan Perante of Miag-ao.
The dump trucks’ drivers and helpers were not harmed.
Nismal Concrete Products of Miag-ao Sangguniang Bayan member Ramon Nismal owned the dump trucks.
The armed men broke the trucks’ windshields, drenched the heavy equipment with gasoline then set them on fire, according to drivers Gene Ngalongalong, 47, of Barangay Durog, Miag-ao and Joel Nanagad, 59, of Barangay La Consolacion, also of the same municipality.
The two and their helpers Jason Cajurao, 18, and John Michael Canini, 19, were allowed to leave by the armed men who introduced themselves as belonging to NPA-Panay’s Napoleon Tumagtang Command.
The armed men, aged between 30 to 40 years old, had rifles and short firearms, according to the drivers.
“Si boss ninyo tana gasuporta sa military. Hambalon mo si boss mo tana isunod namon. Gamayan lang to napatay ni boss mo ang imaw namon,” they quoted the armed men as telling them.
Nismal could not be reached for comment as of this writing.
Prior to the torching, the dump trucks delivered sand gravel to clients in Barangay Agdum.
The Iloilo Police Provincial Office condemned the arson and reminded all police stations across the province to remain on alert.
On Nov. 12, armed men believed to be rebels fired at the detachment of the Iloilo Police Provincial Office’s 3rd Maneuver Platoon in Barangay Bolo, Maasin, Iloilo.
Bursts of gunfire were heard around 5:15 a.m. some 25 meters away from the detachment under Chief Inspector Ronnie Brillo, said Senior Inspector Feliz Alianza, Maasin police chief.
Brillo’s men returned fire, forcing at least four rebels to withdraw, said Alianza.
He considered the incident “only a harassment” but stressed, “We don’t want to be complacent.”/PN
