MANILA – Eighteen police officers under probe over the murder of Mayor Rolando Espinosa of Albuera, Leyte have been released on bail.
Regional Trial Court Branch 14 (Baybay City) Judge Carlos Arguelles signed a release order for the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group Region 8 officers led by Superintendent Marvin Marcos.
Marcos was the head of the team that served a search warrant to Espinosa to look for alleged firearms and prohibited drugs inside his cell at the Baybay sub-provincial jail on Nov. 5 last year.
The controversial operation resulted in the death of Espinosa and another inmate, Raul Yap, after they allegedly tried to fight it out against the police operatives.
Aside from Marcos, also charged were Superintendent Santi Noel Magtira; chief inspectors Leo Laraga and Calixto Canilas Jr.; senior inspectors Deogracia Diaz, Fritz Blanco, Eric Constantino, and Crecito Cardilosas; Senior Police Officer 4s Juanito Duarte and Melvin Caboyit; Senior Police Officer 2s Milla Serrano Jr., Benjamin Dacallos and Antonio Doch;
Senior Police Officer 1 Mark Cadillo; Police Officer 1s Jerlan Cabiyaan and Cristal Briones Gisma; Police Officer 3s Johnny Ibañez, Norman Abellanoza and Lloyd Ortiguerra; Police Officer 2s Niel Centino, John Ruel Doculan, Divine Songalia, and Jaime Bacsal; and PALF Granados Olendan.
Two Senate committees and the National Bureau of Investigation earlier said Espinosa’s killing was “premeditated” by the police to cover up their involvement in the mayor’s alleged illegal drug activities.
Espinosa’s son, the self-proclaimed drug lord Kerwin, testified in a Senate inquiry that Marcos was in his payroll, an allegation the officer vehemently denied./PN
