SAN JOSE, Antique – Its athletics bets gave Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) a boost to maintain its hold on second place on Day 5 of the 60th Palarong Pambansa on Thursday.
Sheila Talja bested her rivals, including WVRAA teammate Elvy Villagoniza, to clinch the gold medal in the secondary girls triple jump at the Binirayan Sports Complex.
A native of Malay, Aklan, Talja finished with 12.18 meters to defeat Gianeli Gatinga of the National Capital Region (NCR), who had 11.91m, and Ilongga Villagoniza, 11.92m.
“Unang-una gusto kong magpasalamat kay God sa lakas na ibinigay niya sa akin sa competition,” Talja said. “Kahit na may pinagdadaanan ako masaya ako at nakapag-perform ako ng mabuti.”
Meanwhile, in secondary boys basketball, WVRAA advanced to the semifinals after a 78-71 victory over Caraga in the quarterfinals. The host team will face the defending champion Calabarzon, represented by San Beda, next.
Pamela Marquillero and Ezel Divinagracia scored a 1-2 finish in the 100m hurdles, while Sharlanne Gonzales and Edna Magtubo also scored golds in elementary long jump and 400m dash, respectively.
Marquillero, a native of Pavia, Iloilo, topped the secondary girls 100m with 15.07 seconds. Finishing behind her are Concepcion, Iloilo native Divinagracia (15.19s) and STCAA’s Eliza Cuizon (15.68s).
Moreover, Carles, Iloilo native Gonzales had 4.95m to beat Marvilyn Canion of Region III (4.70m) and Rona Bacus (4.59m). Gonzales, however, settled for a silver medal in the triple jump event.
For her part, Magtubo claimed the gold in the elementary girls 400m dash for tallying 1:01.47. She was followed by Lheslie De Lima of Region 5 (1:02.97) and Ana Marie Enario of Region 1 (1.03.59).
Other gold medal winners are Allen Noel Gayoso and Raymon Christian Gerosa of secondary boys doubles tennis, and John Clark, John Carl and John Christian Segutier of anyo team event single weapon arnis.
WVRAA silver medalists include swimmer Guiliver Clemente (50m breaststroke), Jill Iron Tabuena in elementary boys shot put and Angela Bermejo in poomsae.
Snatching bronze medals are John Clark Segutier (anyo individual double weapon), Rezen Albano (400m hurdles), Kennard Alarba (boys 100m dash), Crisha Merto (60m archery), Mary Rose Billones (triple jump), Hazel Mallo (girls 100m dash), and the 13-17 secondary medley team (Janelle Sa-ac, Julie Occeno, Camille Belandres, and Celine Deloton).
As of Thursday evening, WVRAA remains on second place overall with 23 gold, 13 silver and 24 bronze medals behind NCRAA’s 60-37-26. Negros Island Region, meanwhile, was on fifth place with 16-15-18./PN
