BACOLOD City – Councilor Ricardo “Cano” Tan declared on Monday he will run for congressman in the 2019 mid-term election.

Tan might pit himself against Rep. Greg Gasataya, who is expected to seek re-election.

Both are allies of Mayor Evelio Leonardia, who leads the local political group Grupo Progreso (GP).

Tan, who ran under GP in May 2016, said he already informed Leonardia regarding his plan after the national election last year.

Right now Tan cannot determine if he will run independently or under a party. He will decide when Election Day nears, he told the press.

‘MOCA’ FINE

Meanwhile Tan sees nothing wrong with tying up with Monico Puentevella, who is expected to make a comeback after losing his re-election bid to Leonardia.

Asked by reporters about their possible partnership already dubbed “MoCa” (Monico-Cano), Tan said, “So what?”

Some of his supporters are identified with Leonardia, while others also support Puentevella, said the councilor.

For the 2016 election, Tan said he wanted to run as an independent candidate but Leonardia invited him to join GP.

Tan said he warned the GP that he will also ask help from Puentevella’s group Magbinuligay Kita sa Kauswagan (MKK) and they might go against it. The GP said that will not happen, so he accepted the invitation.

ISSUES

But during the campaign, some GP members accused him of moving to the opponents’ group when they learned that he was also talking to MKK supporters, said Tan.

He also said there is nothing wrong with visiting barangay leaders identified with MKK.

Waay ko nag-traidor sa grupo (GP),” he stressed. “Waay ko nagbinutig bangud nga sila akon mga liders. Alang-alang nga indi ko sila pagsapakon.”

Tan said he was also accused of financing moves to dismiss Leonardia from office.

All these issues being hurled at him were just “black propaganda” from some GP members, said the councilor./PN
