TANZA Esperanza captured the 2018 Palarong Panlungsod basketball title after defeating Don Esteban Lapuz 104-91 at the La Paz plaza gym in Iloilo City.
Reden Denehay, the tournament’s Most Valuable Player awardee, anchored Tanza Esperanza’s offense on Sunday with 29 points while Toto Segea chipped in with 18 markers.
Both teams had their runs in the first half but Tanza Esperanza got their bearings going in the second half to create distance from Don Esteban Lapuz and build a lead as wide as 13 points.
Jesrial Guzman finished with 28 points while Cobehet Banchoco chipped in 20 markers for the second placer Don Esteban Lapuz.
Named as part of the Mythical Five after the match are Tanza Esperanza’s Segea and Remark Escarella, Don Esteban Lapuz’s Guzman and Banchoco, and Balantang Jaro’s Justine Bautista.
Palarong Panlungsod aimed at discovering potential Ilonggo athletes. It was patterned from the Palarong Pambansa of the Department of Education.
The city Palaro was for Ilonggo athletes born in 2000 and up, or 18 years old and under.
It involved 11 sports disciplines: arnis, basketball, boxing, chess, futsal, karatedo, lawn tennis, table tennis, taekwondo, volleyball, and wushu/sanda./PN
