ILOILO City – An interagency task force is making rounds at transport terminals to check the roadworthiness of public utility vehicles (PUVs).
Terminals are expecting an influx of passengers during the All Saints’ and All Souls’ days on Nov. 1 and 2.
“We are checking PUVs such as buses, taxis and jeepneys,” said Atty. Jose Mari Lamparero, spokesperson for the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) Region 6.
Aside from the LTFRB, the Land Transportation Office and the Police Regional Office 6’s Highway Patrol Group also compose the task force implementing the “Undas 2016: Oplan Ligtas Biyahe.”
The task force led by LTFRB regional director Romulo Bernardes is inspecting PUVs at the following:
* Ceres bus terminal in Barangay Buhang, Jaro district
* Tagbak terminal in Barangay Tagbak, Jaro
* Iloilo International Airport
* Ungka (ITGSI) Terminal in Barangay Ungka, Jaro
* Molo terminal
* Mohon Terminal
* Iloilo Fast-Craft Terminal in Lapuz
PUVs with worn-out tires and defective spare parts, among other problems, will not allowed trips, Lamparero stressed.
The LTFRB official also advised commuters not to patronize “colorum” vehicles, or those without franchise. Operators of such vehicles cannot be held to account in case of accidents, he said.
Lamparero said they have asked bus operators to extend their operation beyond regular working hours.
The task force has also put up help desks at major terminals to assist passengers./PN
