ILOILO – Armed with two new weighing scales, a provincial government task force vowed to apprehend overloaded trucks destroying roads.

But first, the task force’s personnel wanted to be taught how to effectively use the weighing scales, said Provincial Administrator Raul Banias.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) would be asked to conduct the orientation.

The task force’s primary targets are trucks transporting quarry materials (sand and gravel).

“Results of the weighing can be used as evidence in court in case we file charges against violators,” said Banias.

He, however, did not discount the possibility of striking a compromise agreement – mostly payment of a fine – with violators.

Each weighing scale of the task force has a capacity of 15 tons and cost P1.6 million, said Banias.

The scales were delivered to the provincial capitol on Dec. 20, 2017.

Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. recently issued Executive Order (EO) No. 430-2017 regulating sand and gravel quarrying to protect the integrity of provincial roads.

Trucks hauling wet and dripping sand and gravel materials shall not be allowed to pass on provincial roads.

The extraction, loading, hauling and transporting of sand and gravel shall not be allowed during Sundays except when a special permit is secured from the Office of the Governor./PN
