ILOILO City – The city government has established a taskforce to oversee the proper use and maintenance of the Iloilo River North Bank Road, commonly known as the Iloilo Sunset Boulevard.

Mayor Jerry Treñas issued two executive orders: one creating the Sunset Boulevard Task Force and another outlining guidelines for its use.

“Iloilo Sunset Boulevard is a public space for everyone to enjoy, and we must work together to maintain its cleanliness, order, and accessibility,” said Treñas.

The Sunset Boulevard Task Force will consist of various government agencies and offices, tasked with ensuring public safety, environmental conservation, business regulation, and compliance with social welfare policies.

The taskforce is mandated to enforce anti-littering laws and proper waste disposal and regulate street vending, allowing only licensed vendors in designated areas.

It will also prohibit smoking, drinking alcohol during restricted hours, and “park shot” activities.

The taskforce ensures compliance with traffic rules and enforcing curfew hours for minors and prevent illegal parking and noise pollution caused by vehicle modifications.

Safety measures

To prevent drunk driving and ensure pedestrian safety, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) Region 6 conducts random alcohol breath tests on drivers within the boulevard.

Mayor Treñas stressed that violators of these rules, along with other city ordinances, will face strict enforcement and penalties.

The P2.261-billion Iloilo Sunset Boulevard, spanning five kilometers from Barangay Tabucan in Mandurriao to Barangay Cagbang in Oton, has become a popular destination for joggers and motorists since opening in 2024.

It features four lanes, bike paths, solar-powered LED lights, viewing decks, and recreational spaces.

Despite its popularity, maintaining the boulevard’s cleanliness has been challenging.

On February 1, 2025, photos circulated on social media showing the polluted shoreline littered with plastic bottles, cans, and other debris.

The task force aims to address such concerns by implementing strict anti-littering measures and ensuring proper waste management practices.

Acknowledgment of partial turnover

Mayor Treñas thanked the Iloilo City Council for approving his request to acknowledge the partial turnover of completed sections of the Iloilo North Bank Road by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

The certification issued by DPWH Regional Director Sanny Boy Oropel enabled the city government to assume responsibility for the boulevard’s management and maintenance.

“I call on all Ilonggos to observe discipline and responsibility when visiting the boulevard, ensuring it remains a safe and pleasant destination for locals and tourists alike,” said Treñas.

With the continued support of the City Council, Treñas pledged to make Iloilo City a model of sustainable urban development while preserving its natural beauty and fostering a vibrant community spirit./PN
