ILOILO City – The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) in Western Visayas has summoned a taxi operator after a driver was accused of overcharging a vlogger P600 for a ride from Mandurriao district here to the Iloilo International Airport in Cabatuan, Iloilo allegedly bypassing the required use of the taxi meter.

LTFRB acting director, Atty. Salvador Altura Jr., clarified that taxi fares are strictly regulated and must follow metered rates, including the flag-down charge.

“Not using the meter is a violation of the terms and conditions of a taxi’s franchise,” Altura said, requiring the operator to attend a hearing on Monday to explain the incident.

The controversy was initially brought to light in a Facebook post by a user named “Mamita Lakwatsera” who identified herself as a local tourist.

She shared her frustration on social media, alleging that the taxi driver did not use the meter and instead charged her a flat rate of P600.

“Iloilo City, what an embarrassing moment and experience,” she wrote in her post.

Mayor Jerry Treñas also weighed in, expressing disappointment over the incident and emphasizing its negative impact on Iloilo City’s image as a tourist-friendly destination.

“As we approach the Dinagyang Festival, I want to ensure that our transportation services meet the highest standards of integrity and fairness,” Treñas said.

“Let us ensure that every visitor experiences the best of Iloilo City’s hospitality and leaves with only positive memories,” the mayor added.

Local authorities have pledged to address the issue promptly to uphold transportation regulations and safeguard the welfare of residents and visitors alike./PN
