MANILA â Bacolod Tay Tung High School Thunderbolts failed to sustain its strong start as it faltered to National University Bullpups 81-63 in the NBTC National Finals first round on Monday night at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
With the defeat, Thunderbolts was relegated to Division 2 of the competition along with fellow Western Visayan school Hercor College Junior Jaguars, which lost to San Sebastian Staglets 54-84.
âNow that we are relegated to the loserâs bracket, we will aim to claim the overall championship in Division 2,â Thunderbolts team manager Roger Montalbo told Panay News.
Thunderbolts managed to keep in step with Bullpups early in the opening frame behind Ryan Cruz, Mart James Barrera, Christian Gamao, and Fritz Valencia only to fall behind 13-18.
The game was still tight in the second and third period. Thunderbolts charged with Harold Alarcon, Cruz and Valencia on the frontline, only to be behind 44-57 heading into the fourth.
In the final quarter, Bullpups capitalized on the numerous errors of Thunderbolts to widen the advantage to as high as 22 points on inside conversions by center Carl Tamayo.
Cruz top-scored for Thunderbolts with 15 points while Alarcon chipped in with 14 markers, and Barrera was held to 13 points before exiting late in the match with a hand injury.
Tamayo finished with 15 points while Rhayyan Amsali added 14 markers for Bullpups./PN
