GIRL spikers from Bacolod Tay Tung High School ended 2017 on a high note after capturing the 7th Judge Restituto V. Tuanda Jr. Memorial Volleyball Cup title in Jimalaud, Negros Oriental.

Led by Marianne Sotomil, Alyssa Bertolano and Shane Carmona, Thunderbolts defeated the 2016 champion Tanjay Sailors 25-21, 25-22, 25-23 on Dec. 29, 2017.

All the sets were tight from the start with both teams getting chances to take a slim advantage but Thunderbolts showed its resilience at the latter part despite facing a veteran-laden Sailors reinforced by Sta. Lucia Lady Realtorsā€™ Janine Navarro.

ā€œThis tournament is tough since other teams have experienced players but I am glad that our players were able to keep in step with them and win the championship,ā€ said Jose Montalbo, Tay Tungā€™s vice president for sports.

ā€œMore than winning the championship, the team really aims to gain more experience and to determine what is still lacking,ā€ he added. ā€œI must say this is the best way to end the year.ā€

Other members of the Thunderbolts squad were Joan Monares, Joan Doguna, Beatrice Decena, Jeanny Padilla, Nohlin Jundana, Marixi Maligmat, Kiesha Bedonia, Rhean Almendralejo, and Erika Deloria.

Prior to reaching the finals, the Evelyn Aguillon-mentored Thunderbolts defeated Smash squad 25-15, 25-21, 25-15 in the knockout semifinals.

Thunderbolts also swept its three elimination round matches against Canlaon (via default), Tanjay Sailors (25-22, 25-22, 25-16) and Timagray Team (25-12, 25-23, 25-8)./PN
