Tay Tung runner-up in Asean School Games qualifier

DUMAGUETE City – Bacolod Tay Tung High School Thunderbolts’ girls volleyball team fell short in their bid to represent the country in the 2022 ASEAN School Games later this year.

The Thunderbolts, representing Western Visayas, suffered a 25-15, 25-10, 25-23 straight set defeat to Calabarzon region’s California Academy in the gold medal match at the Foundation University here.

Led by Jelaica Gajero and Casiey Dongallo, California Academy surged to an early lead in the opening set before pouncing on every rally attempt by the Thunderbolts.

California Academy maintained its aggression in the second set with unanswered points for an early double-digit advantage en route to a 2-0 set advantage.

Bacolod Tay Tung made it a close contest in the third set with California Academy unable to pull away but the latter came up with crucial hits to finish the game in straight sets.

For topping the three-day tournament the California Academy earned the right to represent the Philippines in the 2022 ASEAN School Games, which will be held in this city at the latter part of the year.

California Academy reached the finals after defeating National University Lady Bullpups in the semifinals on Thursday, while Bacolod Tay Tung ousted Kings Montessori.

The NU Lady Bullpups, meanwhile, relied on the 13 points production of Kiana Olango as they defeated Kings Montessori to finish with the third place trophy.

In the men’s division, Sta Rosa City Division Men’s Volleyball Team is set to represent the country in ASG after stunning NU Bulldogs in the gold medal match.

Jade Alex Disquitado stood tall for the Sta Rosa City Division Men’s Volleyball Team as he towed the Sta. Rosa, Laguna-based team to a straight-set win over the fancied Bulldogs.

Bacolod City’s Living Stones International School settled for fourth place in the boys division following a 22-25, 26-24, 25-22 defeat to Umingan National High School./PN
