BACOLOD Tay Tung High School Thunderbolts claimed the crown in the National Basketball Training Center (NBTC) Bacolod leg after an 83-77 win over STI-West Negros University Junior Mustangs in the do-or-die Game 3 at the latter’s gym.
Tournament Most Valuable Player Ryan Cruz led Tay Tung with 21 points, 16 rebounds and five assists. Mart James Barrera and Harold Alarcon added 17 and 13 points, respectively.
The victory allowed the Dexter Dy-mentored team to represent Bacolod City in the NBTC Regional Tournament on Feb. 23 to 24 in Guimaras.
Both teams had a tight exchange early in the Feb. 8 game. Thunderbolts was holding on to a slim 19-16 lead when Junior Mustangs got its offense going in the second quarter to snatch the lead at the half.
The game remained tight in the second half. Thunderbolts had a slimmer 2-point lead before pulling away behind Cruz, Barrera and Alarcon for a 7-point edge with two minutes left in the match.
Also part of Thunderbolts are Fritz Valencia, Alec Tan, Anton Cacho, Ralph Cagalawan, Andy Villamer, Fritz Tagamolila, John Jereza, Louie Ma, Kaye Perigua, Christian Gamao, Kent Esparagoza, and Joel Baquilar.
Clyd Seballos led Junior Mustangs with 19 points. John John Mojometamo added 14 markers for the team, which failed to complete the title run despite winning Game 1 of the best-of-three finals./PN
