ROXAS City — A first-ever disaster awareness camp for children will be held at Inzo Arnaldo Village Integrated School here on July 7.
The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) will conduct the activity in line with the National Disaster Consciousness Month.
PDRRMO action officer Esperidion Pelaez said the camp will involve disaster preparedness teaching methods custom-tailored for children. It is free of charge.
Some 300 pupils from the said school will participate.
Starting at 8 a.m., the camp will feature storytelling and games. The kids can earn points in every activity and use these to redeem prizes at the end of the camp.
According to Pelaez, once the activity proves to be successful, camps in others schools in Capiz may follow.
Funds from the 1st Capiz Disaster Awareness Run, another event in line with the National Disaster Consciousness Month, on July 5 will be used to buy the children’s prizes.
The fun run will start from the Roxas City Bandstand and end at the People’s Park in Brgy. Baybay.
Interested participants must register with PDRRMO at the Villareal Stadium on Camansi Street, Brgy. Tiza, and pay a P20 registration fee.
PDRRMO also plans to conduct disaster preparedness camps for persons with disabilities (PWDs) and senior citizens.
Compared to others, children, PWDs and senior citizens were more vulnerable to disasters, so well-suited disaster preparedness programs must be made for them, Pelaez said./PN
