MANILA – A bill has been introduced in the Lower House seeking to teach road safety both in elementary and secondary schools.

“There is a need to inculcate the values of road courtesy and discipline back into our culture and what better way than to start with the children,” said congressmen Rufus Rodriguez and Maximo Rodriguez Jr. in filing House Bill (HB) 4160.

HB 4160 proposes to teach Philippine laws on driving and Local Traffic Codes among youth.

Students will be taught traffic signs and the use of pedestrian lanes, under the proposed law.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said road accidents is the ninth leading cause of death in the Philippines.

A 2011 WHO report noted nearly 8,200 deaths or 1.94 percent of total deaths caused by road traffic accidents in the Philippines.

By 2030, road accidents are projected to become the fifth leading cause of death, according to WHO.

“There seems to be a growing number of traffic accidents in the country which can be attributed mainly to the sheer disregard of traffic laws. Attempts to curb traffic law violators have not been successful,” the congressmen said./PN
