MANILA – The five-man Philippine delagation has bowed out of the 2016 Rio Paralympics in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil as veteran Adeline Dumapong-Ancheta faltered in the women’s powerlifting event.
Dumapong-Ancheta failed to duplicate her bronze medal finish in 2000 after struggling to make a good lift on her attempts at 112, 116 and 121 kilograms in the women’s +86 kilogram class.
“I lifted as best as I could but it wasn’t good enough for a good lift,” Dumapong-Ancheta said in a press statement. “It’s a challenge for me to work harder at my sport and have a go at it again.”
Dumapong-Ancheta joined fellow Paralympians swimmer Ernie Gawilan, powerlifter Agustin Kitan and trackster Jerrold Pete Magliwan with no medals to show at the end of the quadrennial event.
Josephine Medina of table tennis was the lone bright spot for the contingent as she bagged a bronze medal in the women’s singles Class 8 event with her 11-6, 11-6, 11-7 sweep over Juliane Wolf of Germany.
The 46-year-old Medina’s feat marks the country’s second Paralympic medal, first since Dumapong-Ancheta clinched a bronze medal in Sydney, Australia four Paralympics ago.
“I hope to inspire other para-athletes basta never give up,” Medina said. “Sana rin magkaroon na ng equality ‘yun bang no discrimination sa pagtingin at benepisyo na natatanggap ng abled and differently-abled athletes mula sa gobyerno.”
“Hopefully (with this win), mabigay nila (government) ang pangangailangan naming mga PWD (persons with disability) athletes para marating namin ang aming goal na magkamit ng medalya para sa ating bayan,” she added./PN
