Teener stuns foes in Pavia chess

PAVIA, Iloilo – Ilongga chesser Fiona Geeweneth Guirhem pulled off a stunner during the Simultaneous Chess Exhibition with National Master Cesar Mariano held recently at the GT Town Center – Pavia here.

The Lemery, Iloilo native Guirhem, a standout of Central Philippine University Golden Lions, emerged the winner in the exhibition after defeating NM Cesar Mariano.

The 18-year-old Guirhem threatened mate on the 32nd move of a Sicillian defense game against the Philippines and United States Chess Master, who was playing the white.

Prior to his defeat to Guirhem, Mariano easily defeated the seven other elementary and high school chess players, which included six-year-old Shan Lester Jamerlan.

For her victory, Guirhem was given a prize of P500 and certificate, while the seven others were given certificates./PN
