MANILA – Thailand swept the Philippines in the Southeast Asian Games women’s volleyball semifinals 25-21, 25-17, 25-17 at the MITEC Hall in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The defeat on Saturday relegated the Filipinas to a battle for bronze medal against either Vietnam or Indonesia.

“I’m content with the way we played against Thailand but it’s obvious that we still need a lot of international experience to be able to keep in step with them,” said Philippines head coach Francis Vicente.

Thinkaow Pleumjit and Kokram Pimpichaya led the way with 13 points apiece while Bamrungsuk Hattaya added 12 markers for Thailand, which aims to retain its SEA Games gold medal.

Thailand zoomed to 8-3 in the opening set. The Philippines managed to keep it close and later led 17-16 on a Jaja Santiago hit. But the Thais regained their form behind Pleumjit for a Set 1 victory.

The second set was tight. Thailand was up 16-13 but later managed to widen the lead on hits by Pleumjit and Pimpichaya.

Thailand waxed hot early in the third set, opening with 11-5 before widening the gap further 20-11. The Philippines came to as close as 16-22 but the Thais came up with clutch points by Pleumjit.

Santiago top-scored with 15 – on 10 attacks and four service aces – while Alyssa Valdez added 10 points for the Philippines./PN
