“This is the end, beautiful friend
This is the end, my only friend, the end
Of our elaborate plans, the end
Of everything that stands, the end
No safety or surprise, the end
I’ll never look into your eyes, again”
–Jim Morrison, Robby Krieger, Ray Manzarek, and John Densmore… aka “The Doors”
PERHAPS if there’s a National Heroes Day speech of President Rodrigo Duterte that “I Am Iloilo” City mayor Jed Mabilog would wish did not happen, it would be last Monday’s celebration.
Just when former World Mayor No. 5 Jed Mabilog was getting complacent and feeling safe “to go back into the water” here comes the “the great white shark”, I mean President Rodrigo Duterte with an announcement in that speech that almost all the natives of “I Am Iloilo” City have been anticipating or wishing to happen.
It would probably be right to assume that Mayor Jed Mabilog and Sen. Franklin Drilon dread and wish the inevitable would not happen. However, moi could not be certain if Cong. Jerry Treñas and Vice Mayor Joe Espinosa III also feel the same way.
And moi will not speculate that Vice Mayor Espinosa is happy the inevitable will finally happen, but moi will speculate that he is also concerned for Jed’s safety and well-being, politics aside.
Just to refresh you in case you missed it, here are excerpts from ABS-CBN News and INQUIRER.net:
Duterte assigns Espenido to Iloilo
Manila – President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday confirmed that he is sending Chief Inspector Jovie Espenido to Iloilo City, which the chief executive once described as the “most shabu-lized” city in the country.
“Your next assignment is Iloilo,” Duterte told Espenido in a speech during the celebration of National Heroes Day.
Espenido was the chief of Albuera police when the town’s mayor, Rolando Espinosa Sr., was arrested on drug charges in Leyte and eventually killed during a police operation in his detention cell at Baybay City, Leyte in November 2016.
Espenido was transferred to Ozamiz City in December 2016.
Several months later, the city’s Mayor Reynaldo Parojinog, and 15 others died in a drug raid.
Duterte assigns Espenido to Iloilo City — Visayas’ ‘drug bedrock’
President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday ordered Chief Insp. Jovie Espenido to be assigned to Iloilo.
Espenido, who has been described by some as a scourge of alleged drug lords, led the raids on the houses of the Parojinog clan in July that led to the death of Ozamiz City Mayor Reynaldo Parojinog and 14 others.
Espenido was the police commander of Albuera, Leyte, when Mayor Rolando Espinosa Sr. was killed in an alleged shootout inside the sub-provincial jail in Baybay City.
“Your next assignment is Iloilo,” Duterte told Espenido during his speech at the National Heroes’ Day celebration in Taguig City.
During the event, the President awarded Espenido with the Magalong Medal, which is conferred on officials and personnel of the government and private individuals who have rendered “extraordinary service or have made exceptional contributions to the success of an activity pursuant to a campaign or advocacy of the President.”
So indeed the inevitable has happened. The dreaded or much acclaimed (depending on which side you’re on) Chief Inspector Jovie Espenido, the “scourge of drug lords and their protectors”, will finally be assigned to “I Am Iloilo” City, lately the most “shabu-lized” and “bedrock of Illegal drugs.”
Here’s an excerpt from moi’s Aug. 4 column in Panay News:
So is Jed Mabilog afraid that President Duterte has set his sights on him?
Moi does not think so; Jed seems to be made of much sterner stuff. He seems to be taking all these in stride. For sure he has sleepless nights just thinking that anytime the axe will fall on his neck and he probably squirmed in his drawers upon learning what happened to Ozamiz City mayor Reynaldo Parojinog Sr. But that is to be expected; after all, Jed is human with fears and anxieties.
Moi believes that should the police with a search warrant comes knocking in the dead of the night at the door of his lovely white mansion by the Esplanade, Jed will not hide under the skirt of his charming wife Marivic but will face them like a man.
And hide that mischievous smile, of course Jed Mabilog is a man; he is not a woman trapped in a man’s body. Putting up a brave front takes courage and moi is certain Jed Mabilog has an ample supply of courage. Not anybody can be World Mayor No. 5 and being formerly one exudes bravery.
Meanwhile, Jabba the Hutt is squirming in his double extra-large yellow knickers. (brotherlouie16@gmail.com/PN)
