WHEN you think about communication, what goes into your head are the types like verbal, non-verbal, intrapersonal, interpersonal, small group, mass and the like. Speaking, writing, semiotics, all the basics from how to formulate a sentence with the proper subject-verb agreement to more complex aspects like the Spiral of Silence theory,  the Cultivation theory, the Encoding-Decoding model of communication, etc.

I recently read a book titled “The Social Helix” by University of the Philippines’ Professor Alfonso B. Deza, PhD, and it made me realize communication is much more broad and transcendental than we previously assumed. The ecosystem with which all living things are interacting now is called the biosphere. It is the global ecological system integrating all living beings and their relationships.

Deza’s book introduced me to the idea of the noosphere or the mind sheathe. It is the sphere of human thought that is dominated by consciousness, the mind and interpersonal relationships.

Channelling the noosphere is possible through meditation and mysticism. Deza mentions how the practices of mystics like the Dalai Lama, Mahatma Gandhi and saints tap into the noosphere.

The superconscious mind which encompasses a level of awareness that sees both material reality and also the energy and consciousness behind that reality is how humans can access the noosphere. The deepening calm you feel after meditation is a sign you are channelling life through the mind sphere. It makes you aware the life is connected.

We can compare this to the String Theory or the way the Na’vi in Avatar have a deep spiritual connection with all the living things on their planet (even plants animals) particularly through the “Tree of Souls.”

Humans have actually been accessing the noosphere since man’s animistic or magical and spiritual self evolved. With new developments in technology we are aware of how important a skill like that is. Less energy and resources gets used up. We could save time communicating with each other without the need of a physical medium. We could know what people feel or think about all over the world without using technology, just the power of our minds.

Accessing the noosphere could help humans develop as a species. (angelica.panaynews@gmail.com/PN)
