BORACAY — LaBoracay partygoers, beware of thieves salivating on money and electronic gadgets.

The number of theft and robbery cases topped other crimes in this island resort in the first three months of 2017.

A report from the Boracay Tourist Assistance Center (BTAC) showed a total of 295 index crimes (crimes against persons and property) or 47 percent of 622 total crimes from January 1 to March 31.

BTAC recorded 170 theft incidents and five robbery cases within the three-month period.

Theft and robbery were crimes against property and also included cattle rustling and carnapping / carjacking.

Of the 120 recorded crimes against persons, physical injuries had the highest number with 114 incidents. Rape came next with three cases, followed by homicide with two incidents and one incident of frustrated homicide.

There were no cases of parricide, infanticide, murder, frustrated murder this year, according to BTAC.

NON-INDEX CRIMES

Boracay Island – with three barangays and a population of 32,267 (2015 census) – had 204 non-index crimes or 33 percent of total crime incidents.

Lights threats with 52 incidents, unjust vexation with 32 and alarm and scandal with 31 posted the highest or 56 percent of the total non-index crimes reported in BTAC.

Other non-index crimes were malicious mischief with 20 cases, followed by estafa with 19 incidents, other deceits (12), direct assault (seven), acts of lasciviousness (four), fraud (four), grave threats and slander (oral defamation) with three cases each, frustrated attempted rape, concubinage and abandoning a minor with two cases each, and illegal gambling with one incident.

TRAFFIC INCIDENTS AND SPECIAL LAWS

Traffic incidents had 63 incidents resulting to 29 physical injuries, BTAC added.  

Violations of special laws had 60 cases which included anti-violence against women and their children with 32, and violations of Child Abuse Act with 12.

Five cases of violation of Republic Act 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 and four incidents of violation of Access Devices Regulation Act were conducted in legitimate police operations.

Illegal recruitment, credit card fraud, illegal possession of firearms and violations of the Anti-Fencing Law and Cybercrime Prevention Act also accounted for six cases./PN
