Three GMs leading Alexander Panchenko Memorial

Anonthe classical tournament honoring one of Russia’s dearly departed grandmasters got underway in Chelyabinsk, Russia, with 125 players competing.

The Alexander Panchenko Memorial unfolded Sept. 7 in honor of the late All-Russian Chess School coach and GM Alexander Panchenko who died in 2009 at the age of 55.

After five rounds of play in the strong nine-round Swiss competition, GMs Vladimir Fedoseev, Aleksey Goganov and Aleksandr Rakhmanov are leading the field with 4½ points each. Seven masters, however, are half-a-point behind and breathing down their necks with four points apiece. They are GMs Dmitry Kokarev, Maksim Chigaev, Aleksej Aleksandrov, Boris Savchenko and Vladimir Zakhartsov, and IMs Nikita Afanasiev and Semen Khanin.

The time control for the tournament is 90 minutes plus 30 seconds increment from Move 1. The average rating of the whole competition is Elo 2190. While not as strong as the classical Igor Kornusov Memorial that preceded it, some seven GMs rated over Elo 2600 and 17 GMs rated over Elo 2500 joined the fray.
