ILOILO City – Entries from the coastal municipalities of Tigbauan and Leganes in Iloilo province dominated this year’s Paraw Regatta.

For Category A – sailboats with waterline length of not more than 16 ft – the entry Arlyn of Orlando Demetillo of Barangay Camangay, Leganes sailed its way to the championship, beating 14 paraws.

Demetillo brought home the P50,000 grand prize and the P5m000 Builder’s Prize.

Categories B and C, meanwhile, were dominated by the paraws of Federico Tantiao Jr. from Barangay Parara Sur, Tigbauan, Iloilo.

Category B was for sailboats with waterline length of 16.1 ft to 22 ft while Category C was for sailboats with waterline length of 22.1 ft and above.

The entry Kiss of Ricardo Gabales of Barangay Parara Norte, Tigbauan topped Category B that had 18 participants.

Cheryl of Tantiado Jr. dominated Category C that had 15 participants.

Gabales and Tantiado received P75,000 and P100,000 as grand prizes, respectively.

The Builder’s Prize of P5,000 for Category B and P3,000 for Category C also went to Tantiado.

Paraw Regatta, launched over 40 years ago, is considered the oldest sailing event in Asia. It pays homage to the paraw, a native wind-powered double outrigger sailboat.

According to Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) commissioner Ramon Fernandez, Paraw Regatta demonstrated passion for excellence of the Ilonggos.

“It’s a thrilling race. The colorful boats also lure local and international tourists,” he added.

Fernandez represented PSC chairman William Ramirez as this year’s guest of honor.

Paraws are fitted with outrigger floats of bamboo to stabilize the boat and prevent the slim main hull from tipping over.

The key feature of its hull is its slim shape, creating a knife-like effect to cut through the water, freeing the boat from displacement constraints.

Originally made from woven matting, the paraw’s sails nowadays are stitched up from synthetic awning materials. The small forward sail, or blade jib, feeds the wind into the powerful, low aspect driving mainsail, the boom of which extends several feet beyond the boat’s hull.

The Iloilo Paraw Regatta Foundation, Inc. headed by Dr. Ronald Raymond Sebastian organized yesterday’s race.
