MANILA – University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses remained on top of the Shakey’s V-League Season 13 Reinforced Conference.
It headed into the semifinals after a 25-22, 25-27, 18-25, 27-25, 15-12 victory over Laoag Power Smashers, making a league-leading 5-1 win-loss slate.
Ennajie Laure led the way with 22 points, on 21 attacks and a service ace, for Golden Tigresses on Wednesday at Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
Marivic Meneses chipped in with 14 markers, including four blocks, while Cherry Rondina contributed 13 points for UST, which is using the tournament to prepare for the UAAP season.
“Kahit matalo kami (against Laoag), malaking bagay na sa amin iyon. Iyong hinahanap namin na ganoong sitwasyon, iyong real scenario, hindi naman maituturo iyon,” said Golden Tigresses head coach Emilio Reyes.
After splitting the first four sets, Golden Tigresses surged to a 4-1 lead in the fifth frame behind three straight service aces by Alex Cabanos. It increased the lead to 8-3 on attacks by Rondina and Pamela Lastimosa.
UST continued the momentum as it hanged on to a 12-7 edge. After a fight back by Power Smashers at 12-7, Golden Tigresses moved to match point at 14-9.
Laoag made its last push on back-to-back conversions by Gretchel Soltones to come to within 14-12, but a running attack by Rondina closed the match for UST.
Soltones top-scored with 27 points, including 26 attacks, while Jorelle Singh added 19 markers for Power Smashers, which slid down to 2-3, tying with University of the Philippines Lady Maroons and Philippine Air Force Jet Spikers./PN
