KaTropa q’finals bid alive; RoS downs Kings

MANILA – TNT KaTropa gave itself at least a shot for a playoff to get in the PBA Philippine Cup quarterfinals after a 101-75 rout of NLEX Road Warriors last night at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

Ilonggo Jericho Cruz and Kelly Williams scored 17 apiece, while Jeth Troy Rosario, Roger Pogoy and Jayson Castro added 14, 13 and 10 points, respectively, for KaTropa (5-6).

KaTropa will have to wait for the outcome of the remaining elimination round matches on Friday to determine if it will have a playoff for the eighth spot in the quarterfinals.

After an early 0-4 deficit, KaTropa controlled the match behind conversions from Cruz, Williams, Castro, and Rosario to build a 58-28 advantage at the half.

KaTropa continued its domination in the second half behind Rosario, Pogoy and Williams, and built its largest lead at 38 points on hits from Philip Paredes and Al Francis Tamsi.

JR Quinahan led with 20 points while Kevin Alas added 14 markers for Road Warriors (6-5), which rested its key players – led by rookie Kiefer Ravena – with a playoffs spot already in the bag.

In the second game, Beau Belga and Jewel Ponferrada came up with huge games as shorthanded Rain or Shine Elasto Painters secured a playoffs spot with a 95-80 victory over San Miguel Beermen.

Holding on to a slim lead early in the final quarter, Belga and Ponferrada spearheaded the Painters’ huge run with outside conversions to open its largest lead at 15 points in the final minutes.

Belga led the way with 19 points while Ponferrada added 17 markers, including 5-of-7 3-point shooting for Painters, which played without injured stars Chris Tiu, James Yap and Jireh Ibañes.

Wala naman kaming control sa nangyayaring injury sa teams namin. Ang tanging kontrol lang namin ay iyong ipapakita namin sa loob ng court,” said Belga. “Masaya kami dahil sure na kami sa playoffs.”
