SAN JOSE DE BUENAVISTA, Antique – The 50 or so out-of-school-youth (OSY) from the town of Tobias Fornier recently received livelihood assistance from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) as part of the Bottom Up Budgeting Program for 2016.
The fund was released on Oct. 13, 2016 and was received through local government unit (LGU)-Tobias Fornier Mayor Jose Maria Fornier. DTI provincial director Mercedes A. Young was on hand during the turn-over ceremony held at the Tobias Fornier municipal hall.
Tobias Fornier, a fourth class municipality in the southern portion of Antique, is an agriculture-based community and thus, its livelihood is focused on agricultural production, both crops and livestock. It was learned, however, that less attention was given to small scale cottage industries and so the town is far behind when it comes using modern technology.
It was also learned that Daonhons would go to the capital town of Antique or even to Iloilo City just to repair their farm machineries and motor vehicles.
Noting further that there are many out of school and unemployed individuals in the community, the LGU deemed it wise to focus its programs and projects on poverty alleviation by providing skills trainings through the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, such as lathe machine and gas tungstin arc welding.
The P2 million grant will be used to conduct training programs for welding to at least 50 OSY and members of the different Civil Service Organization or the non-government organization.
A component of the budget shall also be used to establish a production and training center where the trainees will put to use their acquired skills while earning additional income for their families.
Thus, through livelihood assistance, aside from developing the skills and talents of the OSY and other unemployed individuals, can also make them more productive. (PNA)
