ILOILO City – Nine festivals in Panay and Negros islands are seeing action in today’s Kasadyahan cultural competition of the 2017 Dinagyang Festival.

The contest starts at 8 a.m. after a 6 a.m. Mass with Kasadyahan contingents at San Jose Church, Plaza Libertad.

There are five judging areas – Freedom Grandstand, Iloilo provincial capitol, Quezon-Ledesma streets, Mabini Street, and Maria Clara.

A few years after the birth of Dinagyang, Kasadyahan was conceptualized by local residents and the provincial government of Iloilo. It started as out as mardi gras with participation from city schools, universities and private organizations.

Carousel performance will be observed today – competing contingents will be simultaneously performing in different judging areas.

This year’s participants are the following:

* Tatusan Festival of Caluya, Antique

* Salakyan Festival of Miag-ao, Iloilo

* Tinabu-ay Festival of Murcia, Negros Occidental

* Pintados de Pasi of Passi City, Iloilo

* Tultugan Festival of Maasin, Iloilo

* Patabang Festival of Tapaz, Capiz

* Manggahan Festival of Guimaras

* Haw-as Festival of Dumangas, Iloilo

* Pintados Festival of San Carlos City, Negros Occidental.

Masskara Festival of Bacolod City will also perform but as non-competing contingent.

Now more than 30 years old, Kasadyahan represents a kaleidoscopic view of dazzling culture and customs of the different participating towns. It features something from almost every festival in Iloilo. It helps in strengthening the integrity of Iloilo and also in preserving the generations-old folk traditions.

Tatusan Festival, the Kasadyahan champion in 2016 and 2015, hopes to keep the title for the third straight year.

This year’s Kasadyahan theme is “The Best of Iloilo Festivals, All in One Place!”/PN
