ROXAS City – Seven hundred sixty-five firearms surrendered for safekeeping were accounted by the Capiz Police Provincial Office (CPPO) in view of the “Tokhang Kontra Ginadumili-an nga Pusil” (TKGP), or the campaign against unlicensed firearms from July 20 to Oct. 30 this year.
The firearms, which included an AK 47 rifle, were presented before local media practitioners during a recent press briefing at the CPPO headquarters in Camp Teodorico C. Apil here.
CPPO Acting provincial director Senior Superintendent Canilo Fuentes said that TKGP will be intensified to deter possible election-related violence cases in the province.
“After ‘Tokhang’ if the gun owner is still reluctant to surrender the firearm for safekeeping, we will apply necessary steps to subject concerned firearm holder to police operation,” the province’s top cop said during the media interaction.
However, he added that a License To Own and Possess Firearm (LTOPF) caravan is being worked out for Capiceños to accommodate firearm holders who failed to renew their respective gun licenses.
CPPO records showed that there are more than 6,400 legitimate gun owners in the province but only about 300 among them have renewed their LTOPF and firearm papers.
Fuentes noted that only 539 of the total number of firearms surrendered through various local police stations and CPPO headquarters are eligible for license renewal as the remaining 226 assorted loose firearms are up for disposal by the Regional Logistics and Research Development Division.
TKGP is a Police Regional Office (PRO)-6’s initiative to revitalize and intensify its campaign against criminality in Western Visayas particularly in addressing the proliferation of firearms and reduce crimes involving the use of loose firearms. (PIA/PN)
