ILOILO City – Those who repeatedly violate traffic-related ordinances must be slapped with tougher penalties, the city government said.
Some motorists kept committing violations such as blocking driveways, parking or selling in non-designated areas and disregarding traffic aides, according to City Administrator Hernando Galvez.
“Indi maayo nga ginatolerar ta ang indi manami nga hilimuon,” stressed Galvez.
He said they were consolidating the most common traffic violations and will ask the Sangguniang Panlungsod for a legislative action.
Violating traffic ordinances contribute to vehicular congestion, among other problems, he said.
In many instances, traffic auxiliaries (enforcers) would call out vendors on sidewalks, but the latter were hardheaded, said Galvez.
“Pagtalikod sang traffic enforcers, mabalik naman sila sa (non-designated) area,” he lamented.
Galvez also recalled a time he saw a driver who sped away when a traffic enforcer cited him for a violation. He said he was “disheartened.”
Moreover, many pedestrians would still cross streets despite the “No Jaywalking” sign and ride on jeepneys at non-loading areas, he stressed.
Under Regulation Ordinance No. 2008-393, which amended Ordinance No. 78 series of 1977, a P200 fine shall be imposed on those who disregard signal lights, hand signals by traffic enforcers, and traffic signage and markings.
The same ordinance provided that drivers letting passengers ride on a running board and atop the roof or hood of a moving vehicle, or allowing hitching unto a moving vehicle shall be fined with P300./PN
