BACOLOD City – A “tourism summit” may be held in Negros Island Region late this year or early next year.
“We’re planning to have it in either December or January,” Interior department undersecretary Jesus Hinlo Jr. disclosed.
Hinlo said he has discussed the plan with Tourism assistant secretary Daniel Mercado.
But the Interior official said the region must first determine the tourism destinations to promote.
“Identify places and give tourists an idea where they may stay,” Hinlo said.
Organic farms and farm tourism must be promoted, too, said Mercado.
“We are actually working on programs wherein we can coordinate with the departments of Agriculture, and Trade and Industry,” he said.
Negros Occidental governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. had said the Tourism department promised to help the province endorse organic farm tourism.
The 11th Negros Island Organic Farmers Festival starts today and runs through Nov. 19 at the Negros First CyberCentre.
Around 150 exhibitors — producers, processors, farm owners, and exporters — are participating.
The awards Best Gulayan sa Paaralan, Organic Agriculture Achievers, Best Booth, and Exhibitor with Highest Sales will be given to deserving exhibitors./PN
