MANILA – Prices of water containers quadrupled in the past week as Metro Manila residents affected by a supply shortage scrambled to stock up, a trade official said Monday.

The Department of Trade and Industry issued notices of violation to some businessmen as the price of containers went up to P800 from P200, said undersecretary Ruth Castelo.

“Mundane as it may seem, it is now the most important commodity in the market,” she said.

The DTI had recommended the inclusion of pails and containers as “basic necessities” under the price act, she said.
