Trade dep’t vows aid for Boracay workers, MSMEs

VARIOUS forms of aid will be provided to workers and small entrepreneurs displaced by the six-month closure of Boracay Island, according to the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).

The DTI is a member of the working group on employment and livelihood formed in light of the island’s temporary shutdown.

It is also the lead agency in the establishment of the Operations Center/One-Stop Shop in Boracay.

The agency has identified activities that may provide alternative income to workers and alternative markets for micro, small and medium enterprises, or MSMEs.

It has determined alternative market outlets in nearby resorts and Pasalubong Centers for MSMEs selling in Boracay to continue their businesses while the island is closed to tourists.

In addition, the agency will launch the Negosyo Serbisyo sa Barangay and come up with trainings, coaching and mentoring on business opportunities, online marketing seminar, and micro loans through the Pondo para sa Pagbagago at Pag-asenso, among others.

“We recognize the importance of Boracay Island to our local entrepreneurs,” said DTI Regional Operations Group Undersecretary Zenaida Maglaya.

“However,” she said, “we would also like to ensure that the island maintain its pristine condition, which is why we have identified programs that will help local entrepreneurs.”/PN
