ILOILO City – Iloilo City and selected national government offices on Wednesday signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) for the establishment of the Traffic Academy that will train enforcer-applicants before they will be considered to be hired.
The academy will be under the Public Safety and Transportation Management Office (PSTMO) and will be assisted by partner agencies like the Philippine National Police, Highway Patrol Group, Land Transportation Office, Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board, Department of Public Works and Highways, National Economic and Development Authority, Department of Health and the University of the Philippines Visayas.
PSTMO head Jeck Conlu said the academy was borne out of the desire of Mayor Jerry Treñas to professionalize the traffic enforcers.
“It means that we will enhance their skills and knowledge to become more effective and efficient in the management of our roads. With the Traffic Academy, we already set the qualification standards for our applicants to level up our traffic enforcers,” he said.
He added that those interested to join the city’s rank of traffic enforcers should be a high school graduate or college level, resident of Iloilo City, not more than 35 years old, physically and mentally fit, has no criminal or derogatory record and must pass the Traffic Academy course.
“The MMDA (Metro Manila Development Authority) training will come in.
The University of the Philippines UP as our academe partner and other national government agencies will help us to train our enforcers. Before it is only the PSTMO that handles the routine training,” he said.
The training is eyed to start next month as schedules are being finalized with 20 trainees per batch starting with the 384 existing traffic enforcers.
The training will last for 15 days or up to a maximum of three weeks after which the trainees will be subjected to written and physical examinations.
The PSTMO said that the academy is very timely as the city government is also implementing the Local Public Transport Route Plan since traffic enforcers will be more equipped on how to manage their areas of assignment. (PNA/PN)
