ILOILO City – With the anticipated influx of tourists visiting Western Visayas this holiday season, the Department of Tourism (DOT) issued reminders to ensure a safe and enjoyable travel experience for everyone.

In a tourism advisory, DOT Region 6 director Crisanta Marlene Rodriguez welcomed visitors to the region and emphasized the importance of safety and responsibility during the festive Christmas season.

To make the holidays memorable and secure, the DOT outlined key travel guidelines.

Travel Safely

* Plan Ahead – Secure accommodations, tours, and transportation in advance, particularly in popular destinations.

* Follow Safety Protocols – Wear seatbelts, use life vests for water activities, and adhere to local safety guidelines.

* Stay Informed – Check weather forecasts and local advisories, especially when planning outdoor activities or island-hopping.

Respect Local Culture and Environment

* Mind Local Traditions – Western Visayas boasts a rich cultural heritage. Visit churches, ancestral homes, and festivals respectfully.

* Leave No Trace – Keep beaches, mountains, and heritage sites clean. Dispose of waste properly and minimize single-use plastics.

* Support Local – Buy local crafts and products such as piña fabrics in Aklan, hablon in Iloilo, patadyong in Antique, fresh seafood in Capiz, and heritage delicacies in Negros Occidental.

Avoid Overcrowding

* Be Early – Visit popular sites during off-peak hours to avoid crowds.

* Observe Capacity Limits – Respect restrictions to preserve the beauty and safety of tourist spots.

Emergency Preparedness

* Stay Connected – Keep contact details of local emergency services, tourist assistance desks, and health facilities.

* Stay Hydrated and Sun-Protected – Protect yourself while exploring outdoor attractions.

Director Rodriguez also encouraged tourists to contact the DOT hotlines or local emergency numbers for any assistance:

* Tourist Assistance Hotline – 151-TOUR (151-8687), available for SMART, PLDT, and Globe users

* Mobile Support: +63 954-253-3215

* Social Media – Visit DOT’s official Facebook pages or use their web chat services on the official websites.

“The Christmas season is a time for joy and celebration. Let us celebrate responsibly, ensuring that our presence positively impacts the communities we visit. Together, let us make Western Visayas a destination of meaningful travel and lasting memories,” Rodriguez said./PN
