ILOILO City – Mayor Jerry Treñas is
dangling a P50,000 reward to whoever could give information leading to the
arrest of vandals who savaged palm trees at the Iloilo Esplanade.
“I am willing to spend money para
madakpan ang naga-vandalize kag
nagapatay sa mga tanum,” he said yesterday.
The reward will be from his personal funds, he stressed.
The vandalizing of the esplanade has long been a problem. During the administration of then mayor Jose Espinosa III, plants were uprooted but the culprits had not been identified and arrested.
Just recently, the city government hired 30 “green guards” to secure public plazas and the esplanade from vandals.
The guards underwent a five-day paralegal seminar workshop on anti-littering conducted by the City Environment and Natural Resources Office.
Meanwhile, the city mayor tasked barangay officials to secure city government-commissioned murals in Barangay Sambag, Jaro district.
“Otherwise kanugon lang sang effort naton.
This is a public-private partnership para
mapatahom ang syudad para man sa mga Ilonggo,” said Treñas.
More murals will be painted on blank walls across the city.
On the other hand, Treñas said more than 50 Iloilo trees will be flown to
Iloilo from Los Baños, Laguna. It will be planted in various public plazas all
over the city districts.
“We will start to propagate the Iloilo tree. Sang una damu diri sa aton pero nadula na,amo na nga ginabalik naton,”
said Treñas./PN
