ILOILO City – Dinagyang Festival has a new champion – Tribu Ilonganon of Jalandoni Memorial National High School.
Last year’s second runner-up in the festival’s dagyang dance competition foiled the bid of the 2018 champion, Tribu Panayanon of Iloilo City National High School, to score a back-to-back win yesterday.
In the Kasadyahan regional cultural contest, Tribu Guimarasnon of Guimaras province was the grand champion.
This is Tribu Ilonganon’s third time to win the festival’s championship, ending an 11-year Dinagyang drought. It was the grand winner in the 2006 and 2007 editions of the festival.
Tribu Paghidaet of La Paz National High School was the first runner-up while Tribu Panayanon settled for a second runner-up finish.
Tribu Ilonganon won three other awards: Best Choreographer, Best in Discipline and Best in Choreography.
According to Annie Divinagracia-Sartorio of the Dinagyang Arts Festival Committee, the participating tribes’ performances, costumes and music improved a lot this year.
She organized a workshop for tribe managers and choreographers last year in preparation for this year’s festival.
Tribu Dagatnon of Ramon Avanceña National High School was third runner-up while Tribu Salognon of Jaro National High School was fourth runner-up.
As this year’s champion, will Tribu Ilonganon join the Aliwan Festival in Metro Manila this summer? Ramon Cua-Locsin, president of the Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation, Inc., was non-committal.
Aliwan Fiesta is an annual event that gathers different cultural festivals of the Philippines in Pasay City. Contingents compete in dance parade and float competitions.
In 2006 and 2007, Tribu Ilonganon represented the Dinagyang in the Aliwan and finished a runner-up.
