ILOILO City – Dinagyang Festival has a new champion – Tribu Paghidaet of La Paz National High School.
It bested seven other contingents in yesterday’s “Dinagyang 360°” ati tribes competition to take home a cool P1 million cash prize.
Tribu Paghidaet, last year’s first runner-up, dethroned defending champion Tribu Ilonganon of Jalandoni Memorial National High School that was hoping for a back-to-back win.
Tribu Ilonganon ended up as second runner-up.
The awarding ceremony last night started at around 6 p.m. at the Iloilo City Freedom Grandstand.
Tribu Paghidaet is actually a come-backing champion, having previously won the top prize five times in 2010, 2009, 2008, 2003, and 2002.
Aside from the top honor, it also bagged yesterday six of eight minor awards – Best in Performance, Best in Choreography, Best in Music, People’s Choice Award (Social Media), Best in Production Design, and Best in Discipline.
The two other minor awards, Best in Costume Design and Headdress and Best in Sadsad, went to Tribu Ilonganon.
Yesterday’s competition in four judging areas was tweaked. Unlike in previous years, the performances were better appreciated as these could be viewed in all angles, thus the contest name “Dinagyang 360°”.
The four judging areas were the Iloilo City Freedom Grandstand, corner Iznart-Solis streets, corner Ledesma-Valeria streets, and Ma. Clara Street.
Tribu Panayanon of Iloilo City National High School was first runner-up; Tribu Salognon of Jaro National High School was third runner-up; and Tribu Dagatnon of Ramon Avanceña National High School was fourth runner-up.
There was no more Kasadyahan regional cultural contest yesterday but last year’s champion, a contingent from Guimaras province, performed as guest.
Instead of Kasadyahan, a “Dagyang sa Calle Real” was held on Jan. 25 participated by barangay-based tribes (those in the “Dinagyang 360°” ati tribes competition were all school-based).
Two “Dagyang sa Calle Real” tribes received special awards yesterday – Tribu Parianon, Best in Costume; and Tribu Molave, Darling of the Crowd.
“Dagyang sa Calle Real” was a street merrymaking where revelers could join the tribes dancing.
