SAPIAN, Capiz – A wayward tricycle crashed against a wing van around 5:25 p.m. on Wednesday along the national highway in Sitio Sisi, Barangay Maninang here. Two children died and six others were injured.
They were all siblings – or related – onboard the tricycle, according to Police Staff Sergeant Glenn Bacarro of the Sapian police station.
The casualties were six-year-old Jyra Jean Veloria and three-year-old Bavcie Veloria.
Jyra Jean died of severe head and body injuries while being rushed to the Mambusao District Hospital. Bavcie managed to reach the hospital but would later expire there.
Those injured were the following:
* Jorlan Veloria, 29 years old and the driver of the tricycle
* Anna Liza Parojinog Veloria, two years old
* Jocyl Veloria, a minor
* Aida Veloria, five years old
* Daniel Parojinog, seven years old
* Noah Melaño, a minor
All the victims were residents of Barangay Maninang Sapian, Capiz. They were heading home from Mambusao town.
According to the police, Jorlan lost control of the tricycle when they reached a curve. The tricycle came crashing against an Isuzu aluminum wing van driven by Virgilio Cabaluna, 34, of San Carlos City, Negros Occidental.
The van was from Kalibo, Aklan and was headed to Iloilo province.
Cabaluna and his three companions were taken to the Sapian police station.
The victims’ family have no plan to file charges, police said, but they are appealing for burial assistance./PN
