Trillanes slapped with sedition raps

Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV

MANILA – Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV has been slapped with inciting to sedition charges for attacking President Rodrigo Duterte in his press briefings while holed up at Senate.

Labor undersecretary Jacinto “Jing” Paras filed the charges against the embattled senator on Friday afternoon before the Pasay City fiscal’s office.

“In his interviews, he mentioned a lot of things about the President. He called the President insane, incompetent, mahina ang kukote, corrupt, kung anu-anong adjectives,” Paras said in an interview with GMA News.

“That statements are addressing the people, encouraging the people to go up against the President and overthrow this government,” added the former Negros Oriental lawmaker.

Trillanes is holed up at Senate for more than a week now on fears of being arrested after Duterte issued Proclamation 572 voiding his amnesty.

This is the third time in 10 months that Paras has charged Trillanes after filing a complaint last May accusing the senator of grave threats for allegedly telling him “yayariin kita” when they crossed paths at Senate.

Inciting to sedition is committed when a person incite others to the accomplishment of any of the acts which constitute sedition, by means of speeches, proclamations, writings, emblems, cartoons, banners, or other representations tending to the same end, or upon any person or persons who would utter seditious words or speeches, write, publish, or circulate scurrilous libels against the Government of the Philippines, or any of the duly constituted authorities thereof, according to the Revised Penal Code./PN
