ILOILO City – Alarmed by text scams, Councilor Candice Magdalane Tupas conducted a consultative meeting to get to the bottom of – and counter – these unscrupulous acts.
Held yesterday, Tupas who chaired the Sangguniang Panlungsod’s Committee on Communications and Public Information, invited the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), telecommunication companies, Department of Communication and Technology, Public Information Office, and the media.
“Our purpose is to shed light on this matter and to know how we can work together to prevent Ilonggos from losing money, from putting their health and safety in danger and from being fooled by scammers,” said Tupas.
As a result of the consultative meeting, the lady councilor said her committee will work closely with the Office of the City Mayor and with other stakeholders to counter text scams.
She said they planned to conduct lectures onsite and online to ascertain the health and safety of the Ilonggos and to secure their hard earned money.
Tupas noted a suggestion to draft an ordinance related to this.
She also said she is in favor of the SIM Registration Act which was already approved by the House of Representatives on third reading recently by the Senate on second reading.
“It will be a great step to identify those who scam people via text and to prevent it from happening over and over,” said Tupas.
The consultative meeting was also attended by Committee on Communications and Public Information vice chairman, Councilor Miguel Treñas, and Councilor Sedfrey Cabaluna as the representative of the members of the committee who also gave their inputs./PN
