TUPAS VS DEBUQUE: Garin family’s support in Iloilo vice governor race remains unclear

ILOILO – As the political showdown intensifies between Cong. Raul Tupas of the 5th District and Anilao mayor Nathalie Ann Debuque for the vice governor position in the upcoming May 2025 elections, all eyes are on the Garin family of the 1st District, which holds a substantial voting bloc with 229,437 registered voters as of July 2024.

Tupas filed his certificate of candidacy (COC) on October 5 under the banner of Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (CMD), while Mayor Debuque is scheduled to file her COC today, October 7, representing the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP) and joining Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr.’’s ticket.

In the meantime, Cong. Janette Garin of the 1st District, also of Lakas-CMD, filed her COC on the same day as Tupas, seeking re-election.

However, when asked about whom the Garin family will support between Tupas and Debuque, a clear answer remains forthcoming.

“I believe there is still time to discuss this matter thoroughly since communication is extremely vital,” said Garin, noting that formal discussions had yet to take place due to time constraints.

Garin mentioned she had spoken with Tupas and emphasized that all parties needed to keep communication lines open. She remained hopeful that Tupas and Debuque would engage in meaningful discussions before the race intensifies.

The congresswoman also acknowledged being unaware of the negotiations between Governor Defensor and Cong. Ferjenel Biron of the 4th District, which resulted in Debuque’s unexpected candidacy./PN
