LIBACAO, Aklan – Only 14 percent of those belonging to the priority A1 group here have received vaccine shots of the vaccine against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

According to Municipal Health Officer Dr. Aldrinne Fernandez, this low turnout means there’s a need for a heightened awareness campaign on the COVID-19 vaccines’ safety and efficacy.

As this was being written, 74 eligible persons in the first phase of vaccination (first dose) have received their shot of CoronaVac (vaccine made by Chinas’ Sinovac Biotech) vaccine. Vaccination will continue for 150 eligible front liners and health care workers today to inoculate at least 70 percent in the A1 group.

Despite the consensus that COVID-19 vaccines are the best option to prevent death and sickness from COVID-19, some said they were simply not ready for inoculation.

“Kailangan mabakunahan ang A1 frontliners bago ang vaccination of senior citizens,” Fernandez said.

Libacao has 68 confirmed cases including 23 active cases in the villages of Julita and Poblacion.

Two persons were also admitted in the COVID wards of Aklan provincial hospital while 21 were isolated in quarantine facilities, a report of Aklan Epidemiological and Surveillance Unit showed.

Meanwhile, In Nabas town, teams from Provincial Health Office and Municipal Health Office collected swab samples of 210 persons in Barangay Alimbo-Baybay for molecular laboratory testing in Kalibo, Aklan.

Nabas registered 82 active cases as of May 14, including 79 cases in self-isolation in their homes./PN
