KALIBO, Aklan – A typhoon-resistant school building at the Kalibo Integrated Special Education Center in Barangay Poblacion may be opened soon.
Principal Wilma WerigeneMalapad-Villa expects the BPI Foundation to officially turn over the three-storey, nine-classroom building in October.
The new school building can withstand winds of more than 300 kilometers per hour.

Equipped with emergency alarm systems and security facilities, it will also serve as community evacuation center during disasters.
The building was planned after super typhoon “Yolanda” destroyed public infrastructure, including hospitals and schools, in Visayas. Thousands of people were also left dead or homeless.

The infrastructure was built through the “P10M +P10M” fundraising campaign of BPI employees and friends made under the Department of Education’s Adopt-a-School Program.

On April 22, the BPI Foundation also turned over a three-storey, nine-classroom building to Sagay National High School in Sagay City, Negros Occidental.

The BPI Foundation also partnered with PhilamLife Foundation to put up 12 more classrooms in Leyte and Palawan.
The Philippines is the third most vulnerable country to climate change and extreme weather events, according to the 2012 World Risk Report of the United Nations University Institute of Environment and Human Security.
Experiencing an average of 20 typhoons a year, the country is highly susceptible to flooding and landslides. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
