MANILA – UAAP Board of Managing Directors (BMD) has recommended sanction for University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers head coach Aldin Ayo over the controversial “Sorsogon Bubble.”
According to various reports, the UAAP BMD deemed it was the one-time UAAP champion coach who should be held liable for a training that clearly violated health protocols during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The sanctions for Ayo, however, remain unclear as it will be up to the Board of Trustees, composed of the university presidents, to decide on the penalties. They do not set a timetable for the release of the said penalties.
“Following a lengthy discussion, the UAAP BMD drafted its recommendations, which will be submitted to the UAAP Board of Trustees for review and approval,” the UAAP said in a statement.
“The UAAP understands the gravity of the matter as it concerns the safety and well-being of student-athletes of a member-school,” it added.
The Growling Tigers were put on microscope following its controversial “Sorsogon Bubble” at Ayo’s residence in Barangay Capuy in Sorsogon. The explosion of the said controversy led to the departure of four UST players in CJ Cansino, Rhenz Abando, Brent Paraiso, and Ira Bataller.
There were unconfirmed reports that Ayo has already tendered his resignation with the Tigers and is mulling to return to Colegio de San Juan de Letran Knights, which he steered to NCAA championship before.
Panay News tried to reach Ayo for confirmation or denial about his resignation but has not responded as of press time, while Knights’ chief backer Alfrancis Chua has shut down talks of Ayo replacing current Letran coach Bonnie Tan./PN
