UAAP: DLSU snaps NU’s 108 straight wins

MANILA – National University Lady Bulldogs saw its UAAP-record 108-game winning run that spanned nine years come to an end on Wednesday courtesy of the last school that defeated them.

De La Salle University Lady Archers put on a masterful showing from start to finish to score a 61-57 overtime beating of the Lady Bulldogs in the UAAP Season 85 women’s basketball at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion.

After failing to close out the game in the regulation, the Lady Archers opened the extension period with a three-pointer from Lee Sario and consecutive points from Luisa De La Paz for a 57-52 DLSU lead.

NU’s Camille Clarin pulled her squad to within 55-57 with a three-pointer but the Lady Archers got a basket from Bettina Binaohan to make it a four-point game before De La Paz sealed the win with freebies.

Fina Niatchio Tchuido posted double-double 14 points and 19 rebounds in almost 42 minutes of play as the Lady Archers tightened its grip on the no.2 spot with 11-2 win-loss record.

Charmaine Torres chipped in 13 markers, while Sario and Binaohan ended with 10 points apiece for the Lady Archers which, incidentally, were also the last team to beat the Lady Bulldogs in Game 3 of the UAAP Season 76 Finals in 2013.

Mikka Cacho tallied double-double 12 points and 15 rebounds, while Angel Surada added 11 markers and nine boards as the defending champions Lady Bulldogs slumped to 12-1.

In the men’s action, University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons (11-2) leaned on a strong third quarter surge to beat University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers (1-11), 78-60, over at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

Clinging to a slim 37-34 halftime lead, the Fighting Maroons leaned on Cyril Gonzales and JD Cagulangan in the third quarter to create separation from the Growling Tigers, 59-49.

The Fighting Maroons went on to pull away further  in the fourth quarter behind Gonzales, Carl Tamayo and Richi Calimag as they led 64-49 before widening it to its largest of 18 points.

Tamayo finished with 19 points, including three outside conversions, Gonzales chipped in 14 points, while Maodo Malick Diouf had a complete game of 10 points, 14 rebounds, six assists, two steals, and a block for the Fighting Maroons.
