MANILA – University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers kicked off its campaign in the UAAP Season 82 men’s football with a 1-0 victory over National University Bulldogs at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.
Rookie Stephen Marasigan converted the go-ahead goal at the 81st minute yesterday while goalkeeper Ralph Logronio came up with huge defensive stops down the stretch.
Marasigan, who was brought on as a substitute, delivered an instant impact for the wards of Ilonggo head coach Marjo Allado via a fine strike that eventually became the first goal of the season.
Following Marasigan’s goal, the Bulldogs became aggressive with forward Angelo Paring having a good shot at an equalizer. But his attempt hit the side-netting.
A commotion broke out between the two squads in the stoppage time and the Bulldogs were cunning enough to try and take advantage of it via a quick throw-in. Rookie Bryan Ybanez was through on goal, but his attempt was parried away by Logronio’s magnificent stop.
“Kahit papano nakakuha kami ng 1-0 kahit tight siya,” said Allado. “Kailangan namin i-organize ulit ‘yung team and then questionable talaga ‘yung match fitness. Hopefully, this Sunday against Ateneo it will be much better.”/PN
